Dressing for a college campus visit

My recommendation is that anytime you have the chance to make a first impression on anyone in life or involved with a college campus, you need to dress up and be ready to put your best foot forward.  Now, this does not mean you need to wear a suit or an elegant dress or anything.  It simply means that you need to look presentable.  You want to be comfortable, but also show respect to the coaches and admissions counselor.  It says a lot about you that you cared enough and put the effort in to make a good first impression, and will likely separate you from others on their visit as well.CareerServices6students (1)Guys: I think something as simple as a nice pair of jeans and a polo or a sweater.  Also make sure you are clean shaven, or have your facial hair trimmed and looking presentable.Girls: Try to be conservative in your dress and avoid holes in clothing.  Stay away from short shorts and see through clothing. Something as simple as jeans and a t-shirt or blouse would be comfortable and respectful. For both guys and girls that have any questions or uncertainties about their attire, follow the idea that you want to dress in a manor that conveys respect for the people you will meet on your visit. You don't want people making judgements on you or your character simply because you dressed down for your campus visit.4.28.15_stjames_400 (1)One time at SMU, we had an official visit weekend where we had invited our top recruits and their families to campus for the weekend.  Our top Quarterback recruit for that years class wore jeans that were falling off his hips, an oversized hoodie, and a backwards cap, and walked around our offices like he owned the place.  Many coaches were turned off by the way he presented himself and his behavior.  When this recruit met with our Athletic Director, he told us he did not want us to recruit the young man.  This had nothing to do with the young man's personality, but everything to do with how he presented himself.  If that is how someone wishes to dress on the weekends, I have no problem with it.  But on on any type of campus visit, you need to show respect for the school and the coaches that invited you there.  Remember that they are evaluating you as much as you are evaluating the school and the coaching staff.

Evan Burk is a speaker, former NFL coach, and podcast host who uses the sports world as his backdrop to engage audiences with thought-provoking lessons of leadership, team-building, and creating championship cultures.

Evan Burk is not your typical football coach. Despite not playing football beyond high school and no network in the coaching profession, Evan's unlikely football journey began as a 4th grade coach, where he quickly worked his way to the NFL in just 6 years, and included coaching for teams such as the Miami Dolphins, UCLA, and SMU.

After spending fifteen-plus years working with the highest-performing athletes, coaches, and teams on the planet, Coach Burk uses his unique football coaching background to teach people how to utilize the same strategies in business and life that elite players and teams use to perform at a world-class level.

Evan received his B.S. in business management from the University of Colorado, and his Master of Liberal Studies degree from Southern Methodist University. He also hosts his own weekly sports leadership podcast, The Highest Level, where he reveals how championship team cultures are built and the keys to leadership excellence at the highest level.
