Jets QB Josh McCown Helping Everyone as He Competes for Starting Job
In a Sports Spectrum article showcasing Josh McCown, it is clear that the 15-year veteran quarterback still wants to play. But even though he knows that nothing can replace actually playing, he is displaying excellent leadership for both the team and the Quarterbacks to model themselves after, both now and after he leaves.
Team Success as a Prerequisite to Personal Success
McCown, at 39 years old now, states "my goal is for the quarterback room to play well. And if it's me playing out there, I want to play the best football that I can play. If that's Sam or Teddy, whoever that is, that's the ultimate goal."
Leaving a Legacy
Although McCown wants to play, he acknowledges that he sees a bigger picture of what he is leaving behind with younger players. "If you can be part of finding that guy that can be that guy for this franchise for a long time, that means something to me, that's competitive to me. That's what we get up for work to do, that's what makes it fun", McCown says.
No Substitute for Hard Work
McCown: "For me, it's just a personal thing. At the end of the day, you go to work and you work as hard as you can and you help as many people as you can. And when you lay down and you can have peace at your heart at night, and you know that I did all I could do today, and then you sleep good. That's what I learned growing up, and that's all I know."
There is no way to quantify the value to having a veteran like Josh McCown teach the younger quarterbacks on the team to be a professional athlete. Regardless of who is playing, it is guaranteed that everyone in that room will be putting in the work, pulling the team in the right direction, and pulling for each other.Prediction: Josh McCown will be the quarterback coach for the New York Jets for the 2019 NFL season....just a hunch.
