The 3 C's of Erik Spoelstra's Coaching

The recent Athletic article about Erik Spoelstra is a must-read article for any leader or coach. I can not recommend it enough. Here were my 3 main takeaways on How Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra coaches his team and maintains the team’s culture:

  1. The Value of Competition. The Heat’s culture is based primarily on competition. Competition with each other, competing on the floor, competing with themselves to constantly improve. Spoelstra sets this standard for competition, and he demands it every single day from his players.

  2. The Power of Confrontation. Spoelstra holds his teams’ to high standards and has adopted a willingness for conflict and confrontation with players not meeting those standards. The ability to turn confrontations into positive moments over the years has resulted in Spoelstra’s growth as a leader, growth in his relationships with players, and growth for the team and culture.

  3. Leading with Compassion. Spoelstra values building one-on-one relationships with players. He actively takes part in his players’ lives by taking the time to send a long text to a struggling player or send a gift to a player’s wife or child. These small, behind-the-scenes personal touches are not often seen in pro sports, and are keys to earning respect and getting buy-in from NBA players.
